Old Deadwood Trail Historic MarkerSteamships coming upriver on the Missouri River loaded with freight bound for the Gold Rush in Deadwood, SD docked here and off-loaded onto wagons for the 30 day round trip. From 1876 to 1887, Northwestern Railway operated what they called the "Bull Train" of 20 oxen pulling 3 wagons with 20,000# of freight. Also near this site is the plaque in dedication of the Missouri River bridge to Pierre in honor of US Navy Lt. Commander John C. Waldron, WWII fighter pilot. They traveled from 4 a.m. until 10 a.m., then rested and grazed ox until 4 p.m., then went until dark. The complete operation was made up of 30 wagons and 200 oxen, plus and extra 50 head as replacements.
