Long Description:

Former William H. Phelps House. 1146 Grand, late 1890's. The appearance of this monumental Classical Revival home, constructed of Carthage marble, was altered by the removal of its red tile roof. The carriage house has been rehabilitated into a cafeteria for the St. Ann Catholic School, while the home is used for offices.

– National Register Nomination

Much has changed with the Phelps house since the survey was done for this historic district. In 1979, the St. Ann Catholic parish sold the house to Carthage Historic Preservation. Carthage Historic Preservation has undertaken the monumental task of restoring the house to its original glory. The roof has been restored using replica red tiles much like the original. Extensive interior restoration has also taken place. The house is open for tours on Wednesdays from April to October from 10 to 4. The house is also used as an event venue.

Further information is available at the home's website.
