Long Description:
Gilpin Cemetery (No. 1) was established in 1937 by Sons of Freedom Doukhobors to serve the community of Gilpin. It is privately owned by the Crown and is leased to the community. It is located within the Kootenay Boundary Regional District.
There are approximately 90 internments listed, however when we visited the cemetery we only located a few grave sites. One was a very large mound surrounded by rocks. There were other smaller mounds and small scatterings of rocks. We only found one funeral marker.
The cemetery is overgrown with trees and grass making it difficult to determine the location of the other grave sites. The cemetery is no longer in use. The Gilpin (No. 2) Cemetery is better maintained and is still active.
More instructions: At the next fork, take the right road leading towards the mountain and continue for approximately 500 metres. At the next fork, take the left road leading straight up the mountain and continue for approximately 1 km. The cemetery is on the right side of the road allowance. Note that a four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended.
We were able to make it about 2/3 of the way with our small car. It was about 150 metres continuing on the road to the cemetery.
