Long Description:

Hinterschlumalm, 1651m ASL

High in valleys of Hagengebirge, in today’s Nature Reserve Kalkhochalpen can be found several remains of former shepherds settlements. This pasture (in German Alm) is called Hinterschlumalm, situated at 1691 meters ASL almost at the end of large alpine valley, more than 4 hours walking time from closest civilization.

A first detailed description of this area published a mountain pioneer Hermann v. Barth, who wandered in the Hagengebirge several times in 1873. Since then, the Hagengebirge, intensively used agricultural land has been transformed into a largely unpopulated Nature Reserve. Now only few tourists hike around ruins of last cottage in remote valley.

Access

Hinterschlum Alm is best to approach from Bärenhütte in Bluntautal (5 hours, parking for guests) or from above - Windscharte - the mountain pass on the border with Germany (1.5 hours).
