Long Description:
The Ashland Harbor Breakwater Lighthouse stands on a mile and a half breakwater out in Chequamegon Bay. The artificial breakwater was constructed in 1915 by the Army Corps of Engineers and the lighthouse and boathouse were built a year later. The keepers quarters occupy the 2nd and 3rd stories of the light station. The tower is made of concrete and measures 58’; it still provides iron ore ships safe passage into Ashland Harbor.
The lighthouse is about 2 miles from land and can be seen from several places along the shoreline; the closest viewing spot is from Bayview Park where these photos were taken.
