Long Description:
Two signs at the Interstate State Park at Taylors Falls tell the significance of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway and the importance of caring for this gem. Their texts read:

“The St. Croix and a major tributary, the Namekagan, are recreational treasures for you to enjoy. Congress protected 252 miles of these two rivers as the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, for recreational opportunities, scenic beauty and outstanding cultural, geologic and natural resources. The Riverway is a mix of public and private land. The National Park Service, the states of Minnesota and Wisconsin, and local governments work with citizens to care for these two rivers.”

“Like all rivers, the St. Croix is dependent on a healthy watershed. The St. Croix watershed includes 1770 tributary streams and 628 lakes which drain into the St. Croix River. The watershed’s rivers, streams, wetlands, and shorelines provide migration and habitation routes for hundreds of animal species and provide opportunities for visitors to see wildlife and natural landscapes. Protecting this watershed takes more than state parks and National Park Service. It takes everyone who lives or plays near the St. Croix River to care for the waters, air, and land within the watershed.”

The river is used for recreational activities including canoeing, camping, fishing, wildlife watching; visitors to the Taylors Falls area enjoy the Pothole Geologic Trail, rock climbing, and taking the Taylors Falls Queen for a scenic ride down the river.
