Long Description:
According to Tamara Cunningham of the Nanaimo "Daily News" (04 April 2013), electric vehicles running on "E" now have more places to power-up in Nanaimo.

Twelve new electric car charging stations are rolling out across Nanaimo this week, from University Village to Woodgrove Centre. Combined with four city-owned "level-two stations" and a new fast charge site, electric car drivers will have a 17-station network to plug into across the Harbour City.

The speed that this municipality and its "host" businesses have installed the technology has surprised local supporters, who say the number of stations have more than tripled over 12 months. It follows an island-wide trend which has seen public sites grow from just two municipalities to communities spanning Victoria to Sayward. Ladysmith installed its dual station last week.

Bruce Labelle, a fleet manager with the City of Nanaimo, says the sudden uptake is thanks to heavy investment from the B.C. government and support to businesses from the municipality.

The province has provided grants to communities and businesses to create 454 low-voltage charging stations across B.C. In January, it will spend another $1.3 million to install 13 fast-charge stations, including one in Nanaimo. The goal is to encourage more people to purchase greenhouse-gas reducing EVs by creating a series of charging stations that allow drivers to travel without the fear of being stranded.

Some people have criticized the government - and municipalities like Nanaimo - as spending a little too much on the technology, too soon. According to ICBC, only 285 fully electric vehicles have been insured in B.C. since the end of 2012 and 11 in Nanaimo.

But it's a "chicken and the egg" argument for Labelle.

"Imagine having an internal combustion engine with no gas stations ... it's a hard sell," Labelle said.

"If we want to see electric vehicles continue on and be a real solid choice for people looking to purchase cars then we need to create the infrastructure."

New charging stations are expected to be on sites like Country Club Centre, University Village and Woodgrove Centre. A more complete map is available online at Plug Share.

According to Woodgrove general manager, Mark Fenwick, the province offered local businesses $4,000 per charge port if they paid the rest to built the infrastructure. The $20,000 bill is well worth the cost, he said.

The florescent green parking stalls are located near Toys'R'Us and are visible from the Old Island Highway.

"We got involved because sustainability is very important to us ...and we wanted to offer more customer service," Fenwick said, adding the charge is free.
