Long Description:
Only the locals know about this secluded hot pool. Don't tell anyone else. Park your boat at S38 14.385 E176 25.495 and take a two minute walk on the well beaten path.

Hot spring water enters Wairua Stream as it nears its outlet to Lake Tarawera. This makes for a very pleasant bathing experience. At the pool, the water is not hot, by any stretch -- just imagine a nice warm bath. The volcanic rock bottom makes for a nice do-it-yourself spa treatment.

The hot springs are in the Taupo Volcanic Zone which is a 200-km long belt of volcanic activity stretching from the shores of the Pacific Ocean into the heart of New Zealand's North Island. The massive eruption of Mt. Tarawera in 1886 killed over 100 people and significantly changed the landscape. For hot spring lovers, it is notable that during the largest phase of the eruption, a pyroclastic surge destroyed several villages within a 6 kilometre radius as well as the very famous Pink and White Terraces which, even in the late 1880s was attracting tourists from all over the world to enjoy.
