Long Description:
St. Mary's Basilica once described as the “the prettiest church in Australasia” was built in 1905. The Classically styled church was designed by architect F.W. Petre of Dunedin who had also designed the cathedral in Christchurch. The compact basilica features a dominate dome 37 meters reaching 37 meters above the floor. The church features very beautiful stained glass. The exterior of the dome is copper clad and is noted landmark in the city.

The Basilica is listed as a Category I building on the New Zealand Heritage Register.
