Long Description:
This lock is 15 metres wide and 85 metres long and has an average lift of about 20 metres. The height differential between upstream and downstream is quite variable through the year as the dam is both a hydroelectric and a water control dam. Its major reason for bring is to store water in the Arrow Lakes for hydroelectric production for several dams downstream. Hydro electric production is mostly an ancillary benefit.

The majority of the traffic through the lock is commercial - both loose logs and tugs pulling log rafts downstream to the lumber mill just downstream of the dam. Though commercial traffic has priority, use of the lock is free to fishing and pleasure boats passing to and from Arrow Lakes.

The lock is operated solely by gravity, with no need for pumps to fill or empty it. The operation of fill and empty valves, accompanied by the opening and closing of the lock gates at appropriate times is all that is required to operate the lock.

The 853.4 m (2,800 ft) long earth fill and concrete dam was built as part of fulfilling Canada's role in the Columbia River Treaty, and was originally intended only to control the flow of water in the Columbia River for downstream dams. It was commissioned on October 10, 1968, six months ahead of schedule.

A 185 megawatt powerhouse, the Arrow Lakes Generating Station, was added in 2002. It produces an average of 772 Gigawatt hours of electricity annually.
