Long Description:
When you get off the ferry fro Auckland, turn right and walk along King Edward Parade about 700 m to the Navy Museum at Torpedo Bay. Turning left off the ferry gets you to the Naval Base, HMNZS Philomel.
The Navy museum is realtively new and holds an interesting collection of artifacts, pictures and stories. Admission is free.

As an island nation, the navy is important for defense. At the museum I leaned about the roles of the New Zealand navy and its contributions to war efforts. The HMS New Zealand, a light cruiser, was in the Battle of Jutland in WW I and HMNZS Achilles was in the Battle of the River Platt at the start of WW II. Both ships participated in these and other battles, taking hits and helping to win the battles supporting the British Royal Navy. Torpedo bay was a submarine and mining base at the entrance to Auckland Harbour.
Opening hours: 10 am to 5 pm

Open all year: Except for some holidays
