Long Description:
We were in the area and stopped to pay our respects to those Canadians who scarified their lives.

The Rossland cenotaph was first placed around 1921 and was moved three times and now has a permanent location next to the library.

The Rossland Legion is the protectors of the memories and the cenotaph. The Boer War plaque was added in 2000 by the Legion.

There is a plaque on the cenotaph honoring those who lost their lives during the Boer War.

284 Canadians died during the Boer War, of which three are honored here:

“The first contingent of 1,000 troops sailed from Quebec City 100 years ago, on Oct. 30, 1899. Another 7,638 young soldiers and 12 nurses followed over the next 2½ years. Their destination: South Africa, to join British troops battling the Afrikaner republics of Transvaal and Orange Free State. By the time Britain prevailed in the Anglo-Boer War on May 31, 1902, the young Canada had paid dearly for its first involvement in a foreign war.”
