Long Description:
Jonas H. Lien enlisted in the newly formed SD Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish American War in 1898. He was the first person from Sioux Falls to be killed in action in a foreign war. His older brother, former Mayor Burre, donated land for the city's first park in memory of his brother. As a memorial to Jonas, black stone was quarried from Lien Park to create the facade of the 1908 north unit of the original Washington HS.
