Long Description:
In October 1948, Ansel Adams traveled to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as part of an effort to take photographs of US national parks as sponsored by a Guggenheim fellowship. The Knoxville Museum of Art currently has an exhibit (link) displaying on-line the 47 photographs created on that trip for educational purposes.

This photograph was the only one in the set showing "The Chimneys" which is more commonly known today as "Chimney Top". There is a two mile strenous hiking trail to its summit - although the last section involves a free climb up a steep face of slate rock. Reward is some great views below of the forested park.

There is a pull-off along US-441 that matches up with the contour in this photograph. The foreground trees have also been replaced in the interveining six decades.
