Long Description:
After Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson was accidentally shot by his own men in Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 2, 1863, he was transported from the Wilderness Tavern where Dr. Hunter McGuire amputated his arm and saved his life, to Guinea Station. Thousands of Confederate wounded and sick were sent to the railroad at Guinea Station for transport to hospitals.

When Jackson arrived the Union army had cut the rail lines south of Guinea Station and he had to wait until repairs were made. He was brought to Fairfield, a plantation owned by the Chandler family, and placed in the farm office. His staff and Dr. McGuire stayed with him. After a couple of days rest, it was thought he was on his way to recovery when it was discovered he had pneumonia. His condition worsened and he died on May 10. Jackson's death was a devastating loss to the South and Gen. Robert E. Lee.

After the war, the Chandlers moved from the plantation and the buildings fell into disrepair. The Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad bought the property in 1909 and tore down all the buildings except for the farm office where Jackson had died which they called the Stonewall Jackson Shrine. The shrine became a part of the Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park in 1937.

The grounds are opened daily, but days and hours for the building may vary. It is recommended you call the NPS at 540-373-6122 for current schedule. There is no admission.
