Long Description:
The identification, over the three vehicle doors in Southwark Bridge Road, reads: "MFB 1878 MBW". This originates from when the station was first built and has not been updated. "MFB" stands for the "Metropolitan Fire Brigade"; "1878" was the tear the fire station opened; "MBW" stands for "Metropolitan Borough of Works" which is the authority that looked after the fire service in Victorian times.
The extension to the station, that has five vehicle doors on Sawyer Street, was opened in 1911. A plaque on the wall of the extension reads:
"This extension was opened by Jocelyn Brandon Esq Chairman of the Fire Brigade Committee of the London County Coucil on the 14th day of December 1911".
To the north of the fire station is the London Fire Brigade Museum and a Fire Brigade training establishment.
