Long Description:
Manchester's Piccadilly Gardens was, from 1755 to 1910 the site of the Manchester Royal Infirmary.

After the hospital moved from here Manchester Council was unsure what to do with the site but eventually decided to leave it as an open public space.

After the hospital was demolished formal gardens were installed. because they excavated down to the basement level the gardens were sunken compared to the surrounding area, and this is still true today.

The site at this time had a traditional stone fountain in the gardens. After a large terrorist bomb exploded in the late 1990s, large parts of Manchester were re-developed.

The formal gardens here were replaced with an area that is mainly paved, but includes this splash fountain as the centre piece to the area.

The fountain is fed from an underground aquifer and rainwater to be as environmentally friendly as possible. In warm weather the fountain is enjoyed by many people playing in amongst the jets of water that are computer controlled to create patterns with the jets. It is illuminated at night.

Next to the park is a couple of tram stops so it is easily accessible.
