Long Description:
Because water has carved this canyon over millions of years, Titus canyon has some amazing places where you can see sediment exposed during the dry season. You will need a 4X4 or mountain bike to reach titus canyon. This is a very well maintained road with 100-200 visitors each day. Some of the rocks here are 500 million years old! This canyon used to be part of the mountain. When it rains in Death Valley, it pours for a very very very long time. Over millions of years, flash floods move tons of sediment to the west end of titus canyon. When you exit the canyon on the california side, you can see that there is a hug slope that leads down to the main road. This is all the sediment that used to be part of the mountain side that you just when into. Because of this, in 1927 some miners took advantage of this and started to mine. Over a few months they found nothing and the town of Leadfield was deserted and now it a ghost town along Leadfield Rd, which is the only road into Titus Canyon.
