Long Description:
The Palace of Correio-mor is located at the end of the rural parish of Loures and is one of the most remarkable palaces of the outskirts of Lisbon, for its opulent decor plaster, tiles and paintings.

According to the Grande Enciclopédia Portuguesa e Brasileira, it was formerly called Mata das Flores and was the house of the family Mata, after Philip III of Spain had given the office of postmaster of the kingdom to Luis Gomes da Mata, in 1606.

Descendant of New Christians, was originally known as Luís Gomes de Elvas Coronel, but the same monarch granted him, in 1600, the use of the surname Mata, including a coat of arms, and taking this property as residence.

To the last postmaster of the kingdom, was awarded to the Count of Penafiel, being the second Count, elevated to Marquis. The property belonged to these holders, until 1875, the year when it was bought by Quirino Luís António Lousa, which left it to her daughter, Filipa Maria Lousa Canha, whose husband, José Baptista Canha, introduced notable improvements in the palace decor, and in its gardens.

They had an only daughter, Maria da Assunção Lousa Canha, who spent summers there. She died unmarried on December 26, 1961, without direct descendants, having left the property in her will, to her cousins??, with a term of four years to sell the palace, with about 20 acres of terrain, which has occurred.

Nowadays, the Palace and the surrounding terrains are private property, belonging to the Casa Agrícola da Quinta da Mata, since 1966.

The Palace was declared as a public interest building in January 24, 1967.
