Long Description:

"WEEHAWK" (Official No. 226166), Gross Tons 405. Net Tons 268. Dimensions 145.6 x 37.1 x 12.7, Built 1926. Camden, New Jersey. H.P. 700, approximate capacity 36 cars. 500 pasengers. The Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation used the WEEHAWK as a ferry in 1958, between Cornwall Island and Rooseveltown, N.Y. and was captained by Russell Peterson of Yonkers, N. Y. She had a crew of five, oiler, engineer and two deckhands. Sold in 1960 for scrap to Mr. Zigman of Ogdensburg, N.Y. for $3,150.00

This spot used to be a real backwater but the gates and sluices have recently been opened and a greater amount of water is allowed to flow through the site and canal. This increase in flow has done wonders for the water quality and viziblility. I was very surprised that I was able to actually see the bottom of the canal in places and much more of the wreck than I had ever seen before or imagined possible. This is a great snorkel dive or a spot to burn up your surface interval.

Too log a visit here is easy because one has to walk by these remains to get to the cache which is on my watchlist but for bonus points get the best picture you can of the wreck looking down from the canal wall.

Posted pictures would be a great way to see the difference in the clarity of the water throughout the year. tks
