Long Description:
At first some families worshipped with the Bethlehem Lutheran Congregation, meeting either in Canton, South Dakota or Beloit, Iowa. Other families met in homes and organized the St Lukes Congregation.
These settlers joined in 1891 and began the construction of this church building in LaValley Township, 12 miles southeast of here. On land donated by Jens and Louise Elster, they labored to build their new house of worship using fieldstone for the foundation and lumber from a tree claim. It cost 150$ and was dedicated in 1892.
The Reverend J.O. Haugen, its first minister, preached all sermons in Norwegian. Because he also served in other parishes, services were held here only every third Sunday. Hymn singing was led by a "klokker" or elected song leader and the congregation became well known for its music.
Declining numbers led to its 1978 closing. Funds were raised to move the building to this location and to remodel it. A rededication was held in 1987.
