Long Description:
Redoubt #3 was a Union fort built in Stafford County, VA in 1863 near Aquia LandingClick for related waymark to open in new window where a major Union supply depot was located. The fort was 70 feet long and its earthen walls were 12 feet high and it had 4 guns. It was surrounded by a moat and took 400 men of the 12th Corps ten days to build.

In 2005, the remains of Redoubt #3 were inadvertently wiped out by development of a new subdivision by SYG Associates. The developer, Jimmy Ghaban, said he was shocked when he learned of the fort's destruction and said he would have taken all precautions to preserve it had he been informed of its existence. (He honors this committment with ongoing construction at other nearby sites.) To help make amends, Ghaban erected a $21,000 monument at the location within the Sentinel Ridge subdivision. The monument is 5½ tons of Vermont granite, 9 feet long by 7 feet high, and topped by a star, the symbol of the Union army's 12th Corps. It is inscribed:

UNION REDOUBT #3

Established on this spot in February of 1863, by New York troops of the 12th Corps,
2nd Division, Army of the Potomac, Redoubt #3 was manned by up to 100 soldiers
and supported by 4 rifled artillery pieces. It guarded the approaches to the
Union Supply Depot at nearby Aquia Landing and the 12th Corps camps on the
hills to the East during the winter of 1862-1863. Redoubt #3 was a square enclosure
approximately 70' long and 12' high.

Erected by SYG Associates, Inc., 2005

It was dedicated in January 2006.

Ghaban also financed a historical marker which is located at the entrance to Sentinel Ridge. The GPS coordinates are:
