Long Description:
Monastery Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary (Klášterní kostel Narození Panny Marie), former church of Barefoot Augustinians, represents one of the most precious examples of Baroque sacral architeture of town Tábor.
Monastery Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary is an early baroque construction built between the years 1642 and 1666 for the monastic order of Barefoot Augustinians, the mainstay of Counter-Reformation. The church's front facade in the style of Classical Baroque is decorated with statues of St. Augustin and his mother, St. Monica. Most of the valuable wooden Baroque interior furniture, which had been manufactured in the local carving workshop, has not been preserved. At the beginning of the 19th century the monastery gradually ceased to exist and the building was converted into a prison. Today the local museum has its depository and headquarters in monastery complex, but the church was not desecrated and serves to its original purpose. The church belongs to parishes of Tabor vicariate.
