Long Description:
This is actually a fountain unveiled by His Excellency the Governor, Lord Islington K.C.M.C., D.S.O. 26 January 1911.

It was erected in memory of the Taranaki Men who fell in the South African War 1899 - 1902, by the people of the district in admiration of their patriotism in volunteering to join the Motherland Forces to uphold the Empire.

This was originally a fountain located here on Marsland Hill, but relocated to the Devon Street pedestrian mall about 1976. With the reopening on Devon Street to vehicular traffic in the 1990s, it was relocated back here to Marsland Hill and planted as a garden.
