Long Description:
FAYETTE. 12.5 m. (661 alt., 2,608 pop.), seat of Howard County, is centered by a red-brick courthouse. Organized January 13 1816, Howard County is known as the "Mother of Counties." From it were formed all or part of 36 Missouri and 10 Iowa counties. Fayette, designated the county seat in 1823, became its political tad social, but not its commercial center. A group of brilliant politicians made it their meeting place-- Governors Reynolds, Miller, and Jackson, Judge Abiel Leonard, and General John B. Clark. The county was further strengthened politically by early wealth and a relatively large population. The St Louis Evening New of June 3, 1832, called It a "Delphic region... In the matter of politics, especially with the Democratic party of Missouri...." Of Missouri's first 15 governors, 8 lived at one time or another in Howard County.

Fayette became a business center following the decline of Glasgow as a river port and the development of good roads. The character of its stores, as at its jigsaw trimmed houses, show that the community's principal growth dates from the 1880's. - Missouri: Guide to the "Show Me" State, Tour 1, pg. 350.

Fayette continues to serve as the county seat for Howard county.  The courthouse mentioned in the guide is still in use as the county courthouse.  The population of Fayette has risen only slightly since the guide was written.
