Long Description:
The White Oak Civil War Museum is located where 20,000 Union soldiers of Corps VI once encamped in the winter of 1862 -1863. The museum contains one of the country's most extensive collection of artifacts from the Civil War, both Union and Confederate.

Stafford County, VA did not see any major battles, but it was the site of many Federal and Confederate encampments, minor skirmishes, major supply routes, and other important war operations to the war, due to its close proximity to Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Many artifacts were left behind as soldiers moved on.

The White Oak Museum displays many things that have been found, collected, and donated by the locals over the decades. Included are weapons, ammunition, bottles, plates, canteens, tools, coins, buttons, surgical instruments, personal articles, and photographs. An indoor replica of a campsite with camp huts helps the visitor to envision the uncomfortable and frequently wretched life of a soldier. There is also an outdoor camp on the grounds of the White Oak Museum with camp huts for the visitor to further experience the soldier's existence in the field.

The museum occupies what used to be a one-room schoolhouse known as White Oak School. There is also a research center housed in the building. A Virginia Civil War Trails marker is on site for the nearby White Oak ChurchClick for related waymark and a stone monument to the 6th Corps of the Army of the Potomac who were encamped at this location.
