Long Description:
Once the railway arrived in the valley the importance of Ophir, a gold rush community of the 1860s, began to decline. Instead of stopping in the established community New Zealand Railways chose to stop two kilometres at Omakau. Quickly this community become the centre of the valley and with it the Bank of New Zealand built this impressive building on the street leading to the railway station.
