Long Description:
The shell of this former church was completed in 1850, but its butternut pews and woodwork were not installed until 1856. (Unfortunately, the pews were replaced in 1888 and the woodwork was destroyed by a fire.) The building was used as a church from the time it was built until the early 1940's when it could no longer support itself due to declining membership, the loss of its endowment following the collapse of a local bank, and a fire that destroyed the building's interior. A local women's organization, St. John's Guild, revived the church in 1945 and provided much-needed repairs. The congregation eventually moved out of the building. The Phelps Community Memorial Library occupied the building from 1976 to 2005. The Phelps Art Center has been in the building since 2006.
