California Gold Seekers

The emigrant train of Forty-Niners, 5,000 strong, set out from Fort Smith in April, 1849, with an escort of United States Regulars under the command of Captain R.B. Marcy.

History of Marker:
After the discovery of gold in California, people throughout the continent fell over themselves to get to the source. Arkansas is no different, and the marker shows 5,000 departed from right here.
