Long Description:
The Port of Bridgetown is a general services port, managed and operated by the Barbados Port Inc. The nautical approach is clear, with deep water over 10 meters. The Bridgetown Port comprises of five berths totaling 1,531 meters in length. The port maintains one 40 ton capacity Liebherr gantry crane and one mobile crane of 100 ton capacity.

Port of Bridgetown was awarded the "PORT OF THE YEAR AWARD" in 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1997, as the most efficiently run port in the Caribbean. Again in 1995, the Port was awarded the Caribbean's "Most Dependable Port" as well as the "Dreamworld Cruise Destinations" award for the "Most Improved Port Facilities" and "Most Receptive Destination."

The port is located in a very industrialized area and depending on where you ship docks you may have no choice but to take a 1000 yard bus ride to gain entrance to the customs and immigration area.

Visitors are greeted by and must pass through an extensive shopping mall area. Postal and police services are available in this shopping area. Once you exit the shopping area you will face a swarm of taxi and bus operators. Regrettably many of these operators are extremely discourteous and will jam their vehicles with as many passengers as possible. Once inside a vehicle the drivers will not move until they are paid for the trip which is very different than other ports. This was the norm and not the exception.

If you don’t want to use taxi or tour bus service you can walk to town on a 2 mile stroll along the sea side walk way. Simply exit the port and turn to your right. You can also use the local bus service however our observation indicated that the bus system is heavily used and you may stand more than you sit.

Like any port of call YOU make the trip as exciting and fun as you want so don’t let some minor inconveniences ruffle your feathers or ruin your trip. Get out and see the island!
