James Michael Curley was a US Representative, Boston mayor and Governor of Massachusetts.
Curley was born to Irish immigrants in 1874. After serving as a Massachusetts State Representative, Curley was elected a Boston Alderman while serving a prison sentence. He and an associate had been convicted of fraud for taking civil service exams for two men in their district in order to get them government jobs. While it tarnished his reputation, he was seen by the poor and working class as an advocate for them.
His political life was tumultuous rising and falling in favor and alternating government positions with criminal convictions and incarcerations.
His personal life was no less dramatic. He lost his father and two brothers while young. He outlived his first wife and seven of his children. According to Wikipedia, "... his remaining daughter and another son both died of strokes on the same day in 1950. Both were in the same room of Curley's house talking on the same phone when they had their two strokes."
A pub nearby is named "The Purple Shamrock" after Curley's personal symbol.
