The plaque above the door explains:

Built in 1845 for the Auburn and Rochester Railroad to pump water for locomotives.

It is assumed the pumphouse's cobblestone construction was used because it was affordable, durable and low maintenance. The stones were probably gathered when the bed was prepared to lay the tracks for the railroad.

This is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
