Long Description:
Surfleet- once a coastal village.

Surfleet village was once just two miles from the sea. The Domesday book mentions two salt pans in Surfleet from which sea salt would have been obtained by a process of evaporation. These were a valuable source of income to those living on the coastal margins of the fens.Surfleet was once surrounded by the rivers Welland and Glen inland and the Sea to the east. For centuries Surfleet inhabitants were engaged in avoiding floods which constantly threatened from the sea marsh and river bed, as the sea banks and drainage established by the Romans had on their departure been allowed to fall into disrepair

Several boats are normally moored in the mouth of the River Glen, providing a picturesque marine scene.
