Long Description:

The Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park

The Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park is a very unique slice of Africa, with one of the most diverse habitats in the World. The Park offers the visitor to one of the most breathtaking outdoor experiences imaginable.

The Lake St Lucia is a 38 000 ha body of water which is home to some 1500 crocodiles and over 900 hippos. Many rare bird species can be found in abundance around the waters edge. The variety in habitats includes grasslands, forests, wetlands, mangroves and vegetated dunes (the highest in the world). The beaches and coral reefs are also amazing, the Park also includes a marine reserve

This diversity gives rise to a multiplicity of fauna and flora, unrivaled anywhere in South Africa. It supports an abundance of Nile crocodile and hippo, as well as rhino (both black and white), elephant, buffalo, giraffe, waterbuck, kudu, nyala, impala, duiker and reedbuck, amongst a host of other species. Between November until early January whales and turtles frequent the coastline to breed, which is yet another unique experience.

The Park is over 260 000 ha in total area, but the public is restricted in certain areas. The posted coordinates are for a beautiful viewing platform in the reserve. A visit does not necessarily have to be at those exact coordinates, but anywhere in the reserve.
