Long Description:
This section of the Ice Age Trail has some fond memories for me. I decided to ride it again and add some distance.
In the Fall of 2004, I discover Geocaching. I decided to wait a couple weeks and take my three grandsons out with me on my first cache find. We found 2 caches as we walked along the Ice Age Trail that day. Needless to say, they had a blast.
This time I decided to reverse the trip, add an extra mile or more, and ride a bicycle. Since the grandsons couldn’t join me, I brought MotherGoose along. She promised to meet me at each crossroad, in case I got into trouble.
MG dropped me off at a road crossing at N42 43.354 W089 31.878. My antique Schwinn single-speed balloon-tired bicycle has never let me down. I climbed on and away I went. Most of the leaves had fallen, and they made quite a bit of noise crunching under the tires. I think I was going uphill when I arrived at the first road crossing where MG met me. “I’m doing fine.” I called as I rode by. ½ mile later I stopped at a small bridge for a rest stop. This was where we had found our second geocache, now archived. I continued on my way. Those leaves sure add some resistance to riding a bike. I was beginning to wear down as I pulled up to the finish at Monticello. A large sign, restrooms, the building where we found our first geocache, and MG in the parking lot were a welcome site. Next stop – New Glarus? – Well, maybe another day. I’ve been too long off of the bike, and now, too long on the bike.

This section of the Ice Age Trail is an old railroad bed belonging to the SOO Line Railroad. It is also part of the Sugar River Trail. There is only 15 feet elevation change from start to finish. Trees line the trail but crops are grown on both sides. Blackberries and Black Raspberries can be picked along the trail when in season.
