Long Description:
An Arikara was surprised by an unexpected Sioux war party, ran for a half-mile to warn his kinsman before falling dead from his wounds. The Sioux were so impressed with his bravery that they erected a cairn in his honor, marked the cairn with their own symbol of the turtle, and placed a stone at the place of each drop of his blood. The actual site is about 0.9 miles from this marker. This monument is available for viewing, but you must pass over private property to reach the site. A representative of the State Historical Society told us that the owner of the property is cooperative and will allow visitors access to this Native American historic site. Note: This marker is near Snake Butte and the geograpic center of South Dakota, which was marked with an obelisk, which has been lost. The State Historical Society told us that this obelisk was removed from the site by vandals.
