Long Description:
The Durbeyfield family belive they are related to the d’Urberville family. Tess, the eldest daughter, is sent to the d’Urbeville mansion in the hope she can ingratiate herself with Mrs d’Urbeville. Unfortunately the d’Urbevilles had changed their name from Stokes and are no relation at all. The son of the house, Alec, takes a shine to Tess and gets her a job tending fowls.

Alec eventually seduces Tess after a fair. She gives birth to his child, and calls him Sorrow. Sorrow dies soon after birth. Some time later Tess takes a job at the Talbothay dairy. There she is happy and falls for Angel Clare. They eventually marry and both confess to former indiscretions. Angel tells of an affair with an older woman and Tess tells Angel about Alec. Tess forgives Angel, but Angel cannot forgive Tess. Angel leaves for Brazil to establish a farm. He tells Tess that he will try to forgive and may return for her.

Tess struggles to survive. She eventually sees a wandering preacher and is amazed to find that it is Alec. Alec had been converted to Christianity by Angel’s father. After meeting Tess Alec turns his back on religion and asks her to marry him.

Angel eventually returns from Brazil and seeks Tess. He finds her at a boarding housecalle Herons in Sandbourne. She is now living with Alec. Angel leaves the boarding house and Tess, in a fit of temper, stabs Alec to death. Tess follows and finds Angel. The couple hide out at an abandoned mansion for a few days, before leaving for Stonehenge. Tess is arrested at Stonehenge. She is tried, found guilty and hanged.
