THE VIETNAM WAR (1957-1978)
(A Controversial War)

In an effort to contain the Communist expansion in southeast Asia, Congress in 1964, authorized President Johnson to use force after the Gulf of Tompkin Incident in which the U.S. naval vessels were fired upon. Fighting in 1967 and 1968, with bombings and ground conflicts. The war became bogged down and a political divisive issue in the U.S. When the collapse of the South Vietnam government to the communist North Vietnamese occurred in 1972, the U.S. forces withdrew, with 303,700 military wounded and 56,480 killed in action.
