The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is located beside the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport in Mount Hope (Hamilton), Ontario. Initially the work of a small number of airplane enthusiasts who were interested in preserving aircraft and other bit of Canadian aviation history, has since grown into a world-class aviation museum which is open 362 days a year. In the beginning, aircraft were stored inside two hangers at the Hamilton Airport. A portion of one hanger was destroyed by a fire in 1993, along with 5 aircraft. This led to the construction of the current 108,000 square foot delta-wing shaped building museum building. This new building allowed all operation of the museum (administration, restoration, displays) to be located in a single location. The new building was officially opened by the Museum's Patron, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles on April 26, 1996.
