Long Description:
This picturesque traditional Black Forest house in Todtnau is the birthplace and childhood home of Karl Nessler, also known as Charles Nestle.

He was born May 2nd, 1872 as the son of a shoemaker. In his youth he dropped an apprenticeship as a hairdresser, and then worked in different places in Switzerland, Italy and France where he learned Italian and French. In 1902 he moved to London and made his first inventions. The permanent wave machine was patented in 1909 with several improvements in the following years. When World War I broke out he was interned and his property confiscated as a citizen of Germany. In 1915 he fled to the United States. There he improved his inventions and became very successful. In 1927 his chain had over 500 employees. He lost all his wealth on Black Friday, 1929, and never recovered again. On 22 January 1951, he died at his home in Harrington Park, New Jersey.

His childhood home town has never forgotten one of its most famous sons, especially not his noble donations to the area during the economically difficult times in the early 1920s. Since 1996, Todtnau awards the Karl Nessler Prize every three years to a person has done a notable contribution to the profession of hairdressing.

The house cannot be missed, it is just a few steps from the roller coaster, that is the town's most important tourist attraction.
