Long Description:
Lucy Mabel Culley was born in Costessey, Norfolk in 1880. She studied art at the Slade Art School from 1898 to 1901. Following art school she became a teacher at Sherborne and Berkhamsted. By 1932 she had joined her sister Ruth, in Stevenage, where Ruth ran Westover School.

During her time in Stevenage Mabel Culley established a reputation for her fine drawings and paintings of local scenes. Mabel agreed to illustrate a book on Stevenage, to be written by the renowned local historian Reginald Hine. Tragically, Hine died in 1949 before the book could be written. Mabel published the drawings in the 1950s as the Stevenage Picture Book. She died in 1965. For further details see the excellent article by V Richards in the web link.

The building at 2 Letchmore Rd is the oldest building in Stevenage. Prior to 1773 the house was a butcher’s shop and slaughter house. Between 1773 and 1835 it was the town’s workhouse. After 1835 it became the Gas House. In recent years it has been an architects practice and a solicitor’s office. The timber cladding has been replaced by rendering in a recent refurbishment.
