Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill (1874-1965) loved this house and it was his main residence from around 1922 when it was bought by his wife Clementine until his death. In 1947 a group of benefactors bought the house & donated it to the National Trust on condition the Winston & Clementine could live there until they both died.
