Long Description:
During the initial days of the Allies battle to retake Guam the pre-WWII village of Sumay was heavily bombed by both the US and Japanese forces. After the US recaptured Guam the villagers were relocated to a temporary holding site now called the village of Santa Rita. What remains of the church is the altar cross which was saved from explosive damage from the amount of rubble on top of it. Although the church no longer exists, the people of Santa Rita still consider it there church and an annual mass and fiesta is held both to remember their old village of Sumay and their church, the center of daily life.
