Long Description:
Mahenovo divadlo
Puvodne nemecké Mestské divadlo Na hradbách, postavené v letech 1881-82 podle projektu vídenských architektu Ferdinanda Fellnera a Hermana Helmera, patrí k významným architektonickým památkám mesta Brna.

The short history of Mahen Theatre
- there - the original first nights of Leoš Janácek’s Katya Kabanova (1921), The Cunning Little Vixen (1924), The Makropoulos Affair (1926), From the House of the Dead (1930), Destiny (1958) or the first performance of Prokofiev’s ballet Romeo and Juliet (1938)

Mahen Theatre was built from 1881 to 1882 as a German Brno City Theatre. Led by Mayor Gustav Winterholler, the city council assigned the construction project and implementation to a renowned Viennese architect office of Ferdinand Fellner & Hermann Helmer. The construction was carried out by Brno builder Josef Arnold under the supervision of Viennese architect Josef Nebehosteny.

During the construction, due to recent destructive fire that swept through Vienna and Prague and, consequently, the adaptation of stricter safety regulations, a decision was made to increase the number of staircases and, especially, to have the Mahen Theatre (named so since 1965) fully electrified. And so no gas lighting distribution was installed in the theatre – instead, the whole building was lit with electric bulbs only and the area in front of the theatre with arc lamps. The electrification was conducted by Parisian Société Électrique Edison and Viennese electricity use company Brückner, Ross and Associates. A separate steam power plant was built on the present Vlhká Street exclusively for the theatre’s needs. Edison’s assistant Francis Jehl supervised the works and in 1911 Edison himself paid a visit to Brno and its representative theatre building. Apart from emphasizing safety of buildings, the Fellner & Helmer office was appreciated for its quick pace, reliability and sensitive artistic decoration using historicizing styles of the last third of the 19th century and the contrast of harmonizing Neo-Renaissance facade and emotionally conceived Neo–Baroque interior.

The office regularly collaborated with excellent Viennese artists, of whom many participated in decorating the Brno theatre – sculptor Theodor Friedl, painter Adolf Roth, artistic goldsmith Johann Schonthaler; while the lunettes on the auditorium ceiling were made by Julius Schmidt and Olga Fialková, the original curtain (has not survived) was the work of painter Franz Lefler. Later, busts of major representatives of the Brno Czech theatre were added to the theatre lobby. They included a bust of conductor, head of opera, and director of the National Theatre Brno František Neumann, sculpted by Josef Axmann, and a bust of writer, playwright, and literary manager Jirí Mahen, created by František Prosecký.

A ceremonial evening of 14 November, 1882 opened the theatre with prelude Weihe des Hauses by Ludwig van Beethoven, followed by a versed ceremonial allegory Bei Frau Bruna written by Adolf Franckel, the first director of the theatre. Goethe’s Egmont concluded the event. Until 1918, the building housed solely the Brno German theatre; in 1919 it was handed over to the Czech National Theatre, which has been using it since, with only a short break during the Second World War. Until the new Janácek Theatre was opened, the Mahen Theatre staged predominantly operas and ballets – e.g. the original first nights of Leoš Janácek’s Katya Kabanova (1921), The Cunning Little Vixen (1924), The Makropoulos Affair (1926), From the House of the Dead (1930), Destiny (1958) or the first performance of Prokofiev’s ballet Romeo and Juliet (1938). In 1965 the National Theatre Brno drama section made the building its permanent scene and recently, the ballet ensemble has brought its performances back here.
