Long Description:

The Soldiers' Monument in Riverside Cemetery is a 14' tall weathered brownstone obelisk with inscriptions on three sides and on the base. The dedication appears on the lower part of the south face of the shaft. A raised band on the shaft contains the names of three battles. The monument was erected in July 1872.

Carved crossed rifles adorn the south face of the obelisk. In the band on the shaft is inscribed GETTYSBURG. Below is the dedication:

ERECTED
JULY A.D. 1872
TO THE MEMORY OF
VOLUNTEER SOLDIERS
FROM THIS VILLAGE

On the south pedestal is inscribed with with six names:

SERGEANTS

RICHARD COWLES
WATSON W. WHAPLES
JEREMIAH KELLEY

PRIVATE

WILLIAM H BUTTON
CHARLES H. ROWE
SURGEON IN U.S.A.

The base contains the inscription:

THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR
OUR COUNTRY AND FREEDOM

The east side of the obelisk contains the Seal of Connecticut. In the band on the shaft is inscribed ANTIETAM. The pedestal is inscribed with with five names:

TIMOTHY GLADDING
ALBERT R. THOMPSON
HUGH ROPER
ALBERT S. FROST
SMITH S. TAYLOR

The base contains the inscription:

How sleep the Brave who sink to rest
By all their country's wishes blest

The west side of the obelisk contains a shield. In the band on the shaft is inscribed FORT WAGNER. The pedestal is inscribed with five names:

HENRY HART
JOHN I. HULL
EDWARD D. WOLF
JAMES H. GILBERT
JOHN? E. THERGILL

The base contains the inscription:

God, Preserve the Nation in Peace
