Long Description:
"The tower contains four bells (Faith, Hope, Love, and Freedom), and a carillon of 47 chimes. The bells were used to call churchgoers to the service. They would also be rung for weddings and funerals, sometimes for up to two hours. The bells also functioned as a warning system for fires and other emergencies. Before street lighting was introduced, the bells would ring in the evenings to announce that, from then on, citizens were only allowed in the streets with lanterns. Those without lanterns were considered criminals. The bells are still regularly rung on Sundays as well as at funerals, weddings, and the yearly arrival on 5th December of St. Nicolas, the Oude Kerk’s patron saint.

The Oude Kerk carillon is, according to experts, one of the most beautiful in the world. The carillonneur would give concerts at festive occasions. This is still done every week. The carillon was made by the famous bell caster François Hemony, and consists of 47 chimes. In 1658, Hemony also replaced the four large bells in the tower. 33 of the carillon chimes have since been replaced by new ones, which were made by Koninklijke Eijsbouts."
