Long Description:
Visitors to the Palm Springs Air Museum might notice this small-scale replica of a Corsair. There is a placard next to the bell that reads:
F4U / FG-1 / F3A "CORSAIR"
FIGHTER BOMBER

MAJOR ENGAGEMENTS

The Corsair first saw combat with the Marines on the Solomon Islands in February 1943. By the end of 1943, all US Marine Squadrons in the South Pacific were flying Corsairs. The F4U aircraft quickly brought air supremacy to the American forces from the previously untroubled Japanese.

Corsairs served with the U.S. Navy and Marines until 1958. They also operated with the Royal Navy, France, New Zealand, Argentina, El Salvador and Honduras. Corsairs fought in WWII, Korea, Indochina, Suez, Algiers, Honduras and El Salvador. The last Corsairs retired from service in 1975.

*NOTE* I was told by volunteer staff that many planes and historical items often move around inside the hangers and outside on the tarmac, BUT they always stay within the museum, unless they are part of a visiting exhibition. Waymarkers should keep this in mind when searching for a particular waymark that I or someone else has posted on Waymarking.com. If, by chance, you cannot locate a particular waymark within the museum, please let me know and I'll contact the staff and inquire to its whereabouts. Thanks.
