Long Description:
The industry it created promised to supply building and paving stone for American cities, jobs for skilled workers and great wealth for local intrepreneurs. Begun in 1887, East Sioux Falls sprang to life with a flurry and by the summer of 1890 it was an incorporated city with 500 men working in the quarries.
A group of Sioux Falls men backed by Eastern capital was granted a franchise and formed the SD Rapid Transit and Railway Co. Although the construction of the 7 1/2 mile line over the hilly creek lined terrain to its terminus at East Sioux Falls was a risky venture, the company went forward.
The western end of the line was planned to be at 10th St and Phillips Ave in Sioux Falls. This spot was also sought by the city's horse drawn streetcar line. The rival lines clashed shortly after midnight and May 25, 1890 as each tried to be the first to lay tracks at the intersecion. Expecting a brawl, a large crowd watched as the electric motor line gang was first to arrive. The horse line crew hurriedly assembled its tracks and made for the intersection only to see their materials trashed and scattered by a larger group of East Sioux Falls quarrymen. Having won, the electric motor line officially opened for travel on June 21, 1890. A party of Sioux Falls city officials and newspaper men made an inaugural journey through the scenic countryside. All were impressed with the speed and comfort of the half hour trip. Three cars were in operation including one with an observation deck for smokers. It was the 1st electric motor line in the new state.
