Long Description:
VICTOR MESSINGER HOUSE

BUILT 1895

THIS HOUSE IS LISTED IN THE

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

LISTED AUGUST 9, 1992

THE MESSINGER HOUSE IS ONE OF A HANDFUL OF HISTORICALLY PRESERVED

HOMES BUILT IN GLENDALE IN THE 19TH CENTURY. THIS HISTORIC HOME HAS A

STORY OF THREE OWNERS. VICTOR MESSINGER WAS IN THE FIRST GRADUATING CLASS OF

STANFORD UNIVERSITY ALONG WITH HERBERT HOOVER. HE AND HIS WIFE LILLY

CAME TO GLENDALE IN 1895. THEY BOUGHT TWO LOTS AND BUILT THIS BEAUTIFUL

HOME. VICTOR HAD A LARGE COLLECTION OF BOOKS AND STARTED THE FIRST

COMMUNITY LIBRARY WITH HIS BOOKS. WHEN GLENDALE WAS INCORPORATED IN

1910, VICTOR BECAME THE FIRST TOWN CLERK. THE MESSINGERS LIVED IN THE

HOUSE FOR MANY YEARS.

HAROLD BREWSTER, A PAINTING CONTRACTOR, CAME TO GLENDALE FROM

KANSAS IN 1912, AND IN 1932, MARRIED MAE LEONARD. THEY FIRST LIVED IN A

ONE-BEDROOM HOUSE AND IN 1936, WHEN IT BECAME AVAILABLE, BOUGHT THE

MESSINGER HOUSE. THE BREWSTERS MADE THIS THEIR FAMILY HOME, RENOVATING

IT AND RAISING FOUR SONS THERE. IN 1987, THE BREWSTER BOYS SOLD THE HOUSE TO

MARTHA WIGGANS CAMPBELL, WHO HAD ALSO MOVED TO GLENDALE FROM

KANSAS.

MARTHA LOVED THIS HOUSE. IT WAS RENOVATED ONCE AGAIN AND TURNED INTO

ONE OF ARIZONA'S FIRST TEAROOMS, CALLED "THE SPICERY". THE HOUSE THUS

BECAME THE SETTING OF JOYFUL ACTIVITY FOR MANY YEARS. MARTHA SOLD THE HOUSE

IN 2002, AND THE NEW OWNERS TRIED TO MAKE A GO OF THE TEAROOM, BUT

WITHOUT SUCCESS. THE HOUSE AND PROPERTY, MOST SADLY, BECAME RUN DOWN.

MARTHA ONCE AGAIN TOOK OWNERSHIP OF THE PROPERTY, RENOVATED IT, AND IN

2010 RE-OPENED IT AS "THE SPICERY IN OUR 1895 HOME." THE HOUSE IS AGAIN

A LIVELY PLACE OF LAUGHTER, HAPPINESS AND JOYFUL ACTIVITY.

THIS PLAQUE IS PROVIDED BY THE GLENDALE, ARIZONA HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND
