Quick Description: The source of pressure for this artesian well is within sight: look upriver (south) to the Court Street dam, and it is obvious that there are thousands of pounds of pressure (and gallons of water at a higher elevation) looking for an outlet.

Long Description:

This flowing artesian well is the product of human drilling, as is the source of pressure (the Court Street Dam), but the artesian aquifer developed all on its own, even while races diverting water to the east and west of the river (for industrial use) released some of that pressure.

One thing you will note in the video (and perhaps in first person observation) found on is that the water from the artesian well is muddier than the river water around it (separated at the wellhead by the concrete remains of a cofferdam). I speculate that it is because most of the silt in the river water has already settled before the water spills over the Court Street Dam. The water feeding the artesian aquifer, on the other hand, is heavy with silt from the bottom of the river.
